Oh, and I agree with your endorsement of Montreal. A lovely city.

A friend asked me where I had first encountered the expression "wie Gott in Frankreich". I think that it must have been in something of Ford Madox Ford's that I have since given away. woerterbuchnetz.de gives a variant or two, including "Herr Gott in Frankreich".

Honestly, without wishing to say good things about the settlement after the war, or the United States's role, Germany brought the inflation on itself. U.S. Naval officers beating eggs (which I find hard to picture) or American civilians beating dogs (which one doesn't see that much in America) did not destroy the mark.

I'll take the bait (and comment first!).

The issue with Americans moving to "cheap" European and posting mid pictures of vegetables (lol) isn't the actions as such. Bur rather, they present life in Spain, Italy, or France, or whatever in an intellectually dishonest way. "I moved here because they have vegetables, and it is cheap."

Well, if you cannot find vegetables in the US, then you are an idiot, and Europe is only cheap because Europeans are, frankly, not as financially well off as Americans.

I've written on both the "ugly American" in Paris and the capitalists who "escape capitalism" by moving to Europe, both of these are myths, really.

P.S.- curious to see the "lengthy screed."
